Affirmations remind us that we have the power to create our lived experiences.
It’s been almost 10 years since I consciously kickstarted my personal development and spiritual journey. Changes in my personal life at the time served as the impetus for the transition; I had recently called off my engagement, was becoming increasingly disillusioned with my career, and began to feel the inexplicable need for greater self-awareness and empowerment.
It was at this critical juncture of change that I first boarded the "manifestation train" and discovered the power of the Law of Attraction.
Excited at the potential of shaping my destiny, one of the earliest resources I found to help me on this journey of transformation was affirmations.
For several months, while stuck in traffic on my way to work every morning, I would listen to audio recordings of affirmations by Louise Hay, repeating the suggestions out loud diligently, consciously setting the tone of my mental and emotional state for the day ahead.
At first, I began to notice minor shifts in my mood and behavioural responses until, months later, I was able to bring into form a major intention I had been focused on manifesting.
Since then, I've been a strong proponent of the effectiveness of positive affirmations and their capacity to help us become improved versions of ourselves.
Affirmations are short, positive statements, that when repeated consistently, help shift your mindset and improve your life. By challenging negative thought patterns and behaviours, affirmations aim to create space for personal growth and healing.
Because affirmations work on all 3 levels of the consciousness, it can be a potent tool for reprogramming the brain to accept new beliefs and habits that support your personal growth and well-being.
The best thing about it? Affirmations can be used anywhere, at any time! Practice in the shower, while cooking or exercising.
How to use affirmations
Interested in incorporating affirmations into your routine? Here are some tips to help get you started:
1. Repetition is key
Repetition is necessary to incorporate these uplifting statements into the subconscious since affirmations operate at the level of the conscious mind. Affirmations should therefore ideally be used multiple times each day for a few minutes at a time.
2. Say it loud!
Our words carry powerful energy. By expressing your positive statements out loud, it allows the mind an opportunity internalise the messaging. Additionally, I've discovered that saying affirmations aloud improves mood and facilitates the adoption of a positive perspective on life.
3. Keep it simple
Avoid wordy statements. Specificity makes for the most powerful affirmations.
Try to identify and use 5-10 affirmations at a time. This supports in strengthening your intention and focus on what it is you are trying to manifest.
4. It’s already here
Affirmations are always expressed in the present tense to help reinforce the belief that what we seek is already here. In addition, it also helps strengthen empowerment and confidence to bring your dreams into form.
Examples of Affirmations
Affirmations are incredibly versatile and can be used to support changes in any aspect of your life.
While there are plenty of resources available to get you going, I would encourage you to explore creating your own positive statements. When writing or choosing your affirmations, think about what makes you excited, or lights you up. Studies have shown that when incorporating strong emotion or feeing into affirmations, it becomes increasingly more effective.
Here are a few examples of affirmations to get you started. Feel free to adjust or adapt these to suit your needs.
· I am grateful for my fulfilling and prosperous career.
· I am blessed with abundance in all ways.
· I am a magnet for love and happiness.
· I am strong, confident and empowered.
· I trust myself and my infinite potential.
· I am brilliant, I am bright, I am a radiant being of light.
· I am inspired to make positive changes in my life.
· I love myself unconditionally.
· I am worthy of love, respect and success.
· I embrace my unique gifts and talents.
While affirmations will not miraculously transform your existence into a fairytale, it has been scientifically proven to enhance problem-solving skills, resilience, self-confidence, and bring us a deeper sense of satisfaction with the quality of our lives.
In the words of renown self-help author Napoleon Hill, ‘whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve’.
Let us harness our potential as conscious co-creators of our lives by speaking our dreams and desires into existence. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
